Dr. Shobha Swaminathan is an associate professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and medical director of infectious diseases practice at University Hospital. This week, she is better known for being the principal investigator for the Moderna Phase 3 coronavirus vaccine clinical trial at the school.

A coronavirus vaccine trial is looking for healthy volunteers in New Jersey as part of a Stage 3 clinical research study.

The trial is part of Moderna’s COVE Study, which will involve giving 30,000 people at 89 different testing sites across the country either a vaccine or a placebo dose.

Long-acting injectable drug prevents HIV infections

It’s not an AIDS vaccine but it may be the closest thing to one so far. A long-acting antiretroviral drug given as an injection every 2 months powerfully protected uninfected people from HIV in a large-scale study that was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The apparent success—the study has not been published in a peer-reviewed journal or presented to HIV researchers at a meeting—offers a potentially easier alternative to taking daily pills of other antiretrovirals, which has proved difficult for many people.

“The search for a vaccine began the moment HIV was first identified over 35 years ago, but there have been many challenges along the way due to the unique properties of this virus, including its global genetic diversity,” said Johan Van Hoof, M.D., Global Therapeutic Area Head, Vaccines, and Managing Director, Janssen Vaccines & Prevention B.V., Janssen Pharmaceuticals NV. The Undetectable Equals Untransmitable (U=U) campaign, Treatment as Prevention, and the addition of PrEP and PEP have helped prevent new infections. However, there are still some pockets with high rates of HIV infection in some parts of the US.
